Dr. Jegan Karthikeyan is the ‘Guest of Honor’ at the International Conference on Advancements and Futuristic Trends in Mechanical and Materials Engineering, Organized by Punjab Technical University Punjab Technical University (PTU) successfully organized a three day International Conference on “Advancements and Futuristic Trends in Mechanical and Materials Engineering" on 5-7 October 2012 at the University Main Campus (http://ptuconferences.com/aftmme2012/ ). The conference was organized in collaboration with Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India, New Delhi; Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), Govt. of India, New Delhi and Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Govt. of India, New Delhi. American Society for Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and also industrial sponsors such as HDFC Bank and Godrej. This was the 4th AFTMME Conference organized by the team led by Dr. Buta Singh Sidhu, Dean Academics, PTU. The objective of this conference was to bring renowned academicians, professionals, R & D personnel, industrialists and scholars at a common platform for sharing their views related to the theme of the conference. Around 200 Researchers from 19 states of India and also from Australia, USA and UK participated in this international conference. Over 150 peer reviewed papers were presented at the conference and around 50 of these have been selected for printing in different Journals. About 20 experts from premier Institutions including IITs, NITs and reputed Universities delivered lectures in various plenary and technical sessions of the conference. Dr. M.K. Surappa, Director, Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar was the Chief Guest of the inaugural ceremony of the conference. Eminent scientists including the key-note speaker Dr. Satya Prakash (Emeritus Professor from IIT Roorkee) and ‘Guest of Honor’, Dr. Jegan Karthikeyan (Director, R & D, ASB Industries, OHIO, USA) delivered lectures on various aspects of materials technology. The latest issue of one of the PTU’s technical journals, “International Journal of Surface Engineering and Materials Technology” (IJSEMT). was released at the inaugural ceremony along with the Souvenir and Proceedings of the Conference. The conference was structured to have Plenary Sessions each morning followed by Contributory presentations. Experts from various institutions including Dr. D.S. McPhail (Deputy Director, Graduate School of Imperial College, London), Dr. A.S. Khanna (Dy. Director, IIT, Indore) and Dr. U.K. Chatterjee (Retd. Professor, IIT, Kharagpur) were invited to deliver their lectures in plenary sessions. In the Valedictory Ceremony, the chief guest, Dr. S.S. Channi IAS (Principal Secretary, Technical Education and Industrial Training, Govt. of Punjab) encouraged participants to take up R&D activities to convert the population of the country as the strength rather than the liability. He also added that the research activities play an important role in the growth of the nation and the society.
